Dr. David Hillson – The Risk Doctor at the PM² Alliance 2020 International Conference

Dr. David Hillson - The Risk Doctor

The PM² Alliance is delighted to welcome Dr. David Hillson, the Risk Doctor, as a keynote speaker at the PM² Alliance 2020 International Conference.

Dr. David Hillson is an international thought-leader in Risk Management, a consultant, and Director of the Risk Doctor Partnership. As a popular speaker and award-winning author, who has delivered keynote speeches in more than 60 countries and co-edited a significant number of books, journals, and volumes of conference proceedings, he has long been a major influencer for individuals, groups, and enterprises. This influence is further amplified by his risk-related books—there are twelve so far, and he continues to publish one a year, and the Risk Doctor Briefings which tackle current issues in best practice risk management and are emailed out to members of the global Risk Doctor Network.

Guided by his motto “Understand profoundly so you can explain simply”, David shares his insights and experience in a clear and engaging manner, drawing on his own career to help people understand and manage uncertainty and risk. Because it was the lack of clarity he encountered in his own early days that forced him to adjust and develop the new approaches which have since been adopted into mainstream risk management.

This important legacy includes significant contributions centred on the use of proactive opportunity management in risk management; modifying the risk process to embrace opportunities; defining risk response strategies; using risk metalanguage; clarifying potential sources of risk; understanding and managing risk attitudes; defining risk appetite; defining risk culture; using scalable project risk management methodology; employing the Risk Maturity Model, personal risk management competence, and the Risk Management Professionalism Manifesto.

During his career, Dr. Hillson has received notable awards and honours for his contributions to risk management, being named “Risk Personality of the Year” for 2010–11 by the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), receiving the PMI David Cleland PM Literature Award in 2013, the PMI Eric Jenett PM Excellence Award in 2011, and the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award in 2002. In addition, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in 2007 and an Honorary Fellow of the UK Association for Project Management (APM) in 2008. He is also an honorary fellow of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and the IRM.

PM² and the Risk Doctor

This is not the first time the Risk Doctor has participated in a PM² Conference. Dr. Hillson was a speaker at the OpenPM² 2018 Conference, which was held under the auspices of the European Commission in 2018.

At this event, in a presentation entitled “Creating Silver Linings: A mindset for opportunity”, the Risk Doctor floated the possibility that risks could be beneficial. More precisely, after introducing attendees to risk definition and its omnipresence, he revealed that risks may present opportunities as well as threats.

The main aim of risk management is to find, assess, and prioritise these opportunities. And we can use exactly the same tools we use to hunt down negative risk to take advantage of the emergent opportunities a given risk may present. Crucially, the speaker argued that the PM² Methodology and Mindsets were the key to defining the opportunity in the risk.

We are honoured to have Dr. Hillson as a keynote speaker at the PM² Alliance International Conference and look forward to his tantalizing presentation.

PM² Alliance 2020 International Conference: “Black Swan Hunting – Developing resilience for emergent risks”

At this year’s PM² Alliance International Conference, Dr. Hillson will share his expert opinion on predicting and managing Black Swans. According to the Black Swans theory developed in 2007 by the statistician Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Black Swans are entirely unpredictable and unforeseen events that have a huge impact. Dr. Hillson will argue that, while Black Swan events may be unpredictable, they can still be rationalised and analysed with the benefit of hindsight. What is certain is that, in these turbulent times, Black Swans pose significant challenges in the sphere of risk management.

Having explained and analysed emergent Black Swans, Dr. Hillson will deliver a keynote presentation on how to identify and prepare for circumstances that can lead to significant risks. Employing his clarity and topicality as a strategic compass, Dr. Hillson will present the key elements (i.e. resilience, flexibility) a project needs if it is to survive and thrive as a result of a Black Swan. Can Black Swans be invincible?
