PM² Alliance was present at the 23rd International Congress on Project Management and Engineering (ICPME 2019), celebrated in Málaga (Spain) on 10-12 July.
The ICPME is annually organized by AEIPRO, the Spanish Project Management and Engineering Association, which is also a member of IPMA – International Project Management Association. The ICPME is one of the most important events held in Spain in the field of Project Management. It is an international forum for discussion and debate for all Project Management and Engineering companies and professionals, especially those experts, researchers and trainers involved in the formation of future professionals in the field. This year, participants shared their knowledge and experience in a wide array of areas in order to contribute to enriching the world of Project Management and Engineering.
As part of the ICPM it was celebrated the 3rd International Seminar on Project Management, a specific section of the congress that provides an intensive, diverse, international, English-speaking forum covering all aspects of projects and project management over two full days.
This year the programme of the International Seminar included a round table designed specifically to present and discuss Open PM² Methodology. The participants were Javier Pajares Gutiérrez (PM Professor at the University of Valladolid, Spain), Germán Martínez Montes (PM Professor at the University of Granada, Spain) and Agustín Moya Colorado as PM² Alliance Regional Coordinator Spain. Javier and Germán were part of the team translating Open PM² into Spanish.
Javier presented “PM² in a nutshell: Philosophy and tips beyond the methodology”, providing an introduction and overview of the methodology´s main elements. He also presented his experience teaching the methodology in the master’s in project management he directs at his University. He also provided with some interesting insight on the receptivity of local SMEs to the use of the methodology.
Germán presented “Why use PM²?. PM² is the short & sweet version of PM Methodologies.” He made emphasis on lightness of the methodology and the usefulness of the Artefacts as ready-made templates that guide and facilitate the use of the methodology in any environment and the advantages of having such templates when facing project management.
Agustín presented “Tailoring PM². The case of EU-funded International Projects”, outlining the elements of flexibility of the methodology that allow its implementation in any field, but focusing on the comparative advantages of its application to international development projects. These projects present specific elements for which PM² offers a good fit with the adequate adaptation.
The subsequent round table sparked interest and debate around the purpose and use of Open PM² and its contribution to the current landscape of PM methodologies and standards. Questions were raised and answered regarding the lightness of the methodology, which does not imply lack of robustness. Debate rose also around the applicability to different fields and it was identified that SME, public administration, research and international development were fields where Open PM² could make a greater contribution in terms of improving Project Management practice.
The Congress was an excellent opportunity to discuss in an international and specialized forum about the contribution of Open PM² to the field of professional Project Management and its synergies with other standards and approaches.
