University of Ljubljana Revisits PM² Methodology through European Academy In-House Training

Following the success of its January session, the University of Ljubljana once again welcomed European Academy for a second on-site training course titled Management and Coordination of EC-Funded Projects: The PM² Methodology.
The two-day course, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences, reflected the university’s continued commitment to enhancing project governance capacity and adopting PM², the European Commission’s official project management methodology, across its departments and research teams.

Delivered by European Academy, a PM² Alliance Affiliated Training Provider (ATP), the workshop brought together administrative and academic professionals engaged in EU-funded programmes, including Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and Creative Europe, providing them with both the theoretical foundations and the practical tools needed to manage complex European projects effectively.

Deepening Institutional Expertise in the PM² Methodology

Led by European Academy’s team of European funding and project management experts, the programme provided a structured exploration of PM² principles, templates, and governance mechanisms.
It focused on how universities can implement PM² best practices to strengthen coordination, transparency, and compliance in multi-partner research projects.

Key highlights included:

  • Understanding EU project structures and effective stakeholder engagement
  • The PM² lifecycle and its alignment with EU project phases
  • Use of official PM² artefacts such as the Project Charter, Business Case, and Project Handbook
  • Planning through Work Breakdown Structures and effort estimation techniques
  • Applying the PM² Governance Model and RASCI framework for role assignment
  • Monitoring and controlling timelines, costs, quality, and risk
  • Conducting project closure, evaluation, and lessons learned reviews
  • Access to exclusive PM² templates, checklists, and implementation tools

Interactive group discussions and academic case examples ensured that each participant could translate methodology into actionable improvements within their faculty or project unit.

Strengthening Project Management Excellence in Academia

This training marked another step in the University of Ljubljana’s strategic capacity-building journey, supporting its goal of establishing standardised project management practices that align with European Commission expectations.
By integrating PM² into internal procedures, the University enhances its ability to manage EU-funded projects with greater clarity, accountability, and impact—while fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
