Oxfam Novib Improves Project Management Processes through European Academy In-House Training

In March 2025, Oxfam Novib, one of Europe’s leading development NGOs, partnered with European Academy to deliver a five-day Train the Trainer (ToT) Programme at its headquarters in The Hague. Led by senior trainer Marco Amici, the in-house course strengthened participants’ ability to both manage EU-funded projects effectively and design high-quality internal training initiatives.

This intensive programme was designed to enhance project management capacity, improve training delivery skills, and ensure alignment with European Commission standards for project governance, implementation, and reporting.

Building Internal Capacity for Sustainable Impact

Tailored to the context of a global NGO environment, the training integrated project management principles, European funding frameworks, and adult learning methodologies. Participants developed practical competencies to manage complex projects while also learning how to replicate this knowledge internally.

Key thematic areas included:

  • Introduction to project management standards and terminology
  • European Funding Opportunities mapped to Oxfam Novib’s strategic goals
  • Governance models and project lifecycles based on EU frameworks, such as EUPM²
  • Risk management, procurement procedures, and monitoring mechanisms
  • Financial management, including budgeting, cost eligibility, and reporting
  • Communication, dissemination, and sustainability best practices
  • Adult learning principles, training design, and learner engagement techniques

The programme used an engaging mix of case studies, problem-based learning, mind mapping, and the application of AI tools and digital project management platforms, ensuring immediate relevance and practical transferability.

From Project Managers to Learning Multipliers

The Train the Trainer format empowered participants to evolve from skilled project managers into effective internal educators. Through workshops on public speaking, interactive facilitation, and course design, participants built the confidence to deliver impactful, replicable training within their teams and partner networks.

The programme also reflected Oxfam Novib’s organisational values of gender equity, social justice, and sustainability, ensuring that learning outcomes reinforced both technical and ethical dimensions of international development work.
